4/22/2024
Dear Room 402 Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed the amazing weather. Thank you so much for all of the well-wishes last week. I greatly appreciate the good thoughts. I am getting back on my feet and will return to school on Monday. It was a rough week, battling two different infections in my chest and throat, so I definitely needed the time off. While I am no longer contagious, I will stay masked for at least the first part of the week, just in case. I SOOOOO look forward to seeing all the kiddos again tomorrow! They always help me feel better.

Please look for and be sure to read Mrs. Kaitz's Weekly Update for important messages about all things Atherwood and PTA. Here is a direct link to her newsletter: www.smore.com/yapwh9 (**At the time I published this site, her newsletter had not yet been updated. Please check back later.)
IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE AT THIS TIME:.
1. A couple of weeks ago, I sent home a digital flyer regarding the end of year events we have planned for our 5th and 6th grade students. A paper form was also supposed to be sent home last week, but with the subs in the room, I am not sure it was. We are very excited about all we have planned. There was also a Google Form link that was sent in a separate email. It is critical that form is completed so that we know your child's t-shirt size and get a count on how many parents are interested in helping out in various ways. All donations (we are recommending $25 per child, more is certainly accepted) must be sent in to me in cash or check form (checks made out to Atherwood Elementary and in the memo line, please write "5th/6th grade"). Thanks to those who have already sent in donations. I will continue collecting them this week (the subs were directed NOT to collect anything). If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me.
2. Throughout this week (April 22nd through 26th), we will be celebrating Earth Day every single day. We previously sent home flyers which detailed each days' themes (you can also look at the calendar above). Another way we will celebrate the Earth is by holding a RECYCLING CONTEST. It is by grade level (5th/6th together), and we will be collecting plastic bottles and aluminum cans only. Please send in all collected items THIS WEEK. Before bagging anything up, please count the number of bottles and cans, write the total on the outside of the bag, along with the grade level. This is a contest, with a popsicle party prize up for grabs!!
3. GENIUS HOUR: Due to my absence last week, we did not get to start the 3rd Genius Hour session as planned. We will start our first session this Friday afternoon. I will read through the proposed topics early in the week and let students know if I foresee any issues.
4. Please join us this Thursday evening for OPEN HOUSE!! The night begins at 5 pm, with food, music, a bake sale, and the Art Fair. The classroom will be open from 6 pm to 7 pm. Hope to see everyone there!
5. We have begun the PTA-sponsored Theater Program at Atherwood. Our grade level will be performing The Lion King. The students have access to the script and songs online, and should be practicing at home as much as possibles especially if they have a lot of lines to remember. We only meet with the drama coach on Wednesday mornings, and all other work is done outside of class. The students have a link to the resources in Google Classroom, but here is a link for parents to use as well: www.brightstarperformingarts.com/shrek-resourcesPerformances will be presented either May 28 or 29. As soon as I have the exact date and time for our class, I will let you know.
6. As we quickly approach May, we will be preparing and reviewing for the upcoming State Tests. There are things you can be doing at home to assist with this. One of those is using the online test prep materials. I will be familiarizing your child with these tools as well, but here is a way you can get started at home. 1. click on this link www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html 2. select the green option (Student Interface...) 3. sign in as a guest 4. select your grade 5. select from either the Smarter Balance Practice Tests or Smarter Balance Training Tests categories (5th grade, this includes the Science tests) and start testing!! The practice tests are ungraded and you will not know if your child got the right or wrong answers, but it is more about practicing the format than anything else.
7. There has been a change in post-COVID return to school policies. In short, here is what it is: "The District will no longer use the COVID-19 symptom decision tree. If an employee or student has symptoms of an any illness (e.g., fever, cold, flu, stomach flu, COVID-19, etc), they should stay home or be sent home. The employee or student may return to work/school when they feel better as long as they have been fever free for 24 hours. There is no requirement to isolate for 5 days, even if the person tests positive for COVID-19. Basically, we will go back to how things were done prior to the pandemic. "
8. Please check out the PTA website for more detailed information about current events (link above and here): www.atherwoodpta.com/news
Please remember: While ALL school hours are critical, it is understandable that on occasion, doctors' appointments need to be/can only be made during school hours. Please use the schedule posted at the top of this page to help navigate the best time for your child to miss class, should that scenario arise. As well, a heads up of such an occurrence or absence is always appreciated. Please also remember that you must call/contact the front office directly in order to report an absence. It is a good idea to touch base with me as well, but they are the only ones that can clear an absence.
I think that is all for now. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions. Have a wonderful week!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and were able to find some fun family things to do in or out of the rain. If your family attended Friday night's Masquerade Ball and you have some photos to share, I'd love to see them! I heard it was a magical evening!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed the fabulous weather. It was great to see so many families and classmates cheering one another on at the Junior Olympics on Saturday. It is such a fantastic event!! As you may or may not be aware, there is a solar eclipse taking place during school hours tomorrow, Monday, April 8th. In preparation for the event (which will only be a partial view for us in California), I have purchased appropriate viewing glasses (NASA approved) for each child. We will be doing some activities in class in order to prepare for the eclipse, and get a chance to go outside to view it during the event. Safety will always be the first concern. Please remind your kids of this as well!

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE AT THIS TIME:.
1. FIELD TRIP SLIPS: Trip slips will coming home this Monday for our April 16th field trip to The Tree People. There are two parts to it - the permission slip and the lunch order. On the permission slip, much has been filled in already, but please complete all starred and blank items. As well, if your child would like to order a school lunch, please complete and return the attached form. Trip slip and lunch order must be returned BY FRIDAY of this week. If we do not have a pre-order for lunch, your child will expect to bring their own lunch from home.
2. FIELD TRIP CHAPERONES: Due to limitations at the site, pricing, and space on the bus, we will only be allowed to take 2 parent volunteers/chaperones from our class. If you are interested in being one of them, please email me NO LATER THAN THURSDAY NIGHT to be added to the interest list. Some basic requirements: You must be available the entire day 4/16, be prepared to ride a school bus, be able to participate in a short hike, have volunteer clearance through the office, and complete additional paperwork which I will provide. My guess is there will be more than 2 parents interested in chaperoning, so I will likely have to go to a random draw, which will be done in class Friday. Once that is complete, I will let you know if you secured one of the spots or not.
3. Last week, the 5th graders completed the Physical Fitness Tests with the PE coaches. We have a couple of makeup tests to do. Once all data has been collected, I will add the results into Aeries. You should have received the yellow card from your child last week with the results as well.
4. Last Wednesday, we began the PTA-sponsored Theater Program at Atherwood. Our grade level will be performing The Lion King. The students have access to the script and songs online, and should be practicing at home as much as possible. Performances will be in late May. The students have a link to the resources in Google Classroom, but here is a link for parents to use as well: www.brightstarperformingarts.com/shrek-resources
5. This Friday is our class SPRING PARTY!! We are excited to see what our Room Parents have planned for us. Thanks to those of you who signed up to send in food and craft supplies. Please be sure to send in all materials prior to noon in Friday.
6. GENIUS HOUR/STATE REPORT is almost over. 6th grade students will have their final work session and turn in their projects this Friday. They will present their studies on April 4th and 5th. Meanwhile, 5th grade will be assigned their final 2 slides this Friday, which will be due the evening of April 4th. Presentations for 5th grade will then begin to take place the following week.
7. The Kids Heart Challenge is this Friday. All students will participate, but we do need all students to register for the Kids Heart Challenge. If you have not yet done so, please complete the paper form (attached to the packet that previously went home), or sign up online. It is also important to fundraise. While not mandatory, it teaches the students about community service and doing great things for others. Fundraising takes place through March 22nd, the day of the challenge. Our top class fundraiser will get to adopt a Heart Hero!! If you did not already register, here is the link again: www2.heart.org/site/TR;jsessionid=00000000.app30126a?company_id=440779&fr_id=9735&pg=company&class=571&NONCE_TOKEN=6C0AA056218BB98815D6BE7D508C354B
8. Junior Olympics practice: Teams are continuing to practice and get ready for our April 6th event. Any questions you have about practices should be sent directly to your coach or please contact Julia Philibosian at [email protected]for more information.

Please look for and be sure to read Mrs. Kaitz's Weekly Update for important messages about all things Atherwood and PTA. Here is a direct link to her newsletter: www.smore.com/yapwh9
IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE AT THIS TIME:.
1. We are excited for the return of our annual Vocabulary Day Parade this Friday, March 15th. The students all turned in their plan for their word and should be working hard this week to get the poster display (clearly showing the word and definition) and costume ready for Friday. Parents are welcome to attend. Here is a link to the flyer from Mrs. Kaitz: e3bc638d012e966492df8ac2a77006ac.png
2. Last week, we had a wonderful assembly with author Danny Jordan as part of our Read Across America Week festivities. Students also received an order form to purchase his latest book, Lex Leads the Way, and get it signed by the author. Please return all orders before this Friday.
3. This Wednesday, all 5th graders will be completing the Physical Fitness Tests with the PE coaches. They have been training for this all year and hopefully results will reflect their hard work. Please make sure they are dressed appropriately for PE on Wednesday.
4. On Wednesday, we will also begin the PTA-sponsored Theater Program at Atherwood. We have not yet been told much about what the program will bring, but we are excited for the opportunity.
5. We need all students to register for the Kids Heart Challenge. If you have not yet done so, please complete the paper form (attached to the packet that went home last week), or sign up online.
6. A separate email went home earlier today to sign up for necessary supplies for our upcoming Spring Party. Please let me or the Room Parents know if you have any questions. Thanks!
7. Junior Olympics practice: Teams are continuing to practice and get ready for our April 6th event. Any questions you have about practices should be sent directly to your coach or please contact Julia Philibosian at [email protected]for more information.
8. The second GENIUS HOUR session is under way. 6th grade students are working on topics of personal interest, while 5th grade students are working on their State Reports. Please note that the way the State Report works is that 5th grade students will get a new assignment of 2 slides each Friday. This helps break down the entire project into very manageable chunks. All directions and specifications will be posted in Google Classroom, along with sample slides. We will go over the directions in class and students will have an opportunity to begin the research necessary to put the slides together for that week. Students then have until the following Thursday to complete the 2 slides. That means they have to work on them on their own time. This helps with learning time management. Please note: Since some of this work is done at home, parents can help with research, but are expected to let the students do their own writing and slide organization. I do not want to grade parent work. :)

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and were able to enjoy the incredible weather! I just wanted to comment on the earthquake experience last Friday. We were quietly working on Genius Hour in the afternoon, and as soon as the earthquake hit, the kids that were working indoors IMMEDIATELY went under their desks and remained quiet until further instruction. They were incredible! This is why we practice drills. There were some students who were working outside at the time and most commented that they did not feel it, but most stayed put and also waited until we were given the all-clear. Earthquakes like this are always a great reminder to check our emergency supplies and make sure our families have an evacuation plan in place. Having practice drills at home is also a great idea!

This is optional and to be completed at home, if interested.
9. Many families are continuing to schedule school tours at the middle school sites over the few weeks. It is a great way to get a feel for the different schools and students are encouraged to attend to help with the decision making that comes along with School-of-Choice. I appreciate knowing in advance if your child will be missing a morning (or more) in order to visit one of the schools. Thank you to the parents who have already been notifying me.
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and were able to get outdoors to enjoy the beautiful weather. I can't believe it is already almost February - for some reason, January always seems like the longest month of the school year (LOL), yet also flies right by!!

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE AT THIS TIME:.
1. As you know, Junior Olympics Field Day and tryouts were held last Friday. The kids did a great job, and I think a few even surprised themselves with their talents!! Thank you so much to the parents who came out and helped with the events and braved the winds! A form went home with kids that afternoon, asking for interest in participating in the Junior Olympics on April 6th if selected for the team. Please be sure to complete and return those forms by THURSDAY of this week, so that the Jr O committee can make start creating their teams and sending out official paperwork next week.
2. You can still order books from Scholastic through midnight on Wednesday, January 31st. Please use this link and code GVLDB to connect to my class page and place your orders: clubs.scholastic.com/home?eml=SBC/CAC/GVLDB
3. Students can still purchase Yo-Yos through this Tuesday after school in the office. Cash only. The information and pricing sheet was sent home last week.
6. Deadline is approaching for the art poster contest opportunity for 5th grade students: An email was previously sent to 5th grade families regarding an Art contest through the US Department of Justice. If interested, please use the packet attached to the email to locate the guidelines, application, and address to which the submissions should be sent. Posters are due by February 9th. This is optional and to be completed at home, if interested.

1. As you have heard, Junior Olympics Field Day/tryouts has been moved to this Friday, due to the rain expected Monday. On Friday, students should dress for PE - wear appropriate shoes/clothes, bring water, and consider wearing sunscreen or a hat. We REALLY need parent volunteers to make it a smooth day. I hope you all had a wonderful, long weekend and had time to reflect on the true meaning behind today's day off. The kids and I had some very meaningful (at times, emotional) discussions about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the impact and legacy he left behind. The students reflected on their impressions about him and his accomplishments, as well as their own personal hopes and dreams for the future. If you find some time to do so, please continue the discussion at home.
Coming up the next couple of weeks of school (subject to change - check the Calendar link on my site for most up-to-date info):

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE AT THIS TIME:.
1. Please note that Weekly Reports will be coming home again beginning this Wednesday. They will have the Genius Hour scorecards and most recent Reading test results attached. Please be sure to keep the Genius Hour page for your own records, but sign and return the bright yellow page along with the Reading test.
2. Current classroom needs/requests: boxes of tissue and reams of white copy paper (20 lb.)
3. The second GENIUS HOUR session will be introduced this week. 6th grade will continue to have a choice of topics of interest, while 5th grade will use the time for their State Reports, with weekly requirements. On Tuesday of this week, 6th grade will receive their plan/proposal paper, similar to last session, and 5th grade will receive their state wishlist sheet. Both are due on THURSDAY. Friday will be the first work session: 6th grade will work on researching their approved topic, and 5th grade will sort out who will be studying which state and begin work on their first slide (the cover slide).
4. Junior Olympics will be held on April 6th at Royal High School. All of our 4th-6th grade students have the opportunity to try out and be part of the team. It is an amazing cross-district event and an incredible team-building experience. This Friday, from 2:15-3:15, interested students may try out for the Volleyball Team. Next Monday, ALL students will participate in the Field Day, which will help determine students who qualify for the other track and field events. We need MANY parent volunteers for Field Day to happen. A flyer will come home on Tuesday detailing how to get in touch with the PTA to let them know you are available and interested in helping out. This flyer is also included in Mrs. Kaitz's newsletter sent out on Sunday.

I hope you all had a wonderful Winter Break and New Year and were able to celebrate your families and holidays safely and in good health. My break started off with bronchitis, and I was down for the count for about a week. It was wonderfully 'forced' relaxation, however, and I was able to get caught up on reading, TV watching, and snuggling with my pets. The second half of my break was relaxing as well, spending much-needed time with my parents and friends (and more time reading/watching TV. LOL).
THANK YOU so much for all of my wonderfully thoughtful gifts and cards. I feel very appreciated and was smothered with so many of my favorite things! I am still in the process of writing personalized Thank You notes and will get them to students by the end of the week.
The last couple of days have been very busy, with prepping for the coming weeks, as well as Professional Development all day today. I look forward to seeing your kids tomorrow and welcoming them back to Room 402!! We will use this short week to get reacquainted, review school/classroom rules and expectations, and review previous skills. Next week, we will dive back into new learning and experiences.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE AT THIS TIME:.

1/6/24 Hello, hello!! And, Happy New Year, families of Room 402. I hope this email finds you healthy and well.
Just wanted to remind you all that while teachers head back Monday and Tuesday for preps and Professional Development, students will not return to campus until Wednesday. I will not be updating my website until Monday, possibly Tuesday, but I just wanted to touch base briefly and send you this reminder at this time.
I hope you enjoy your final days with your kiddos and are making the most of the Winter Break. I look forward to seeing all of my students' faces when they return on the 10th.
Best to you all, Miss Saffro

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE AT THIS TIME:.
1. Please note that Weekly Reports will be coming home on MONDAY this week, and are due by Wednesday. They will include last week's Math test, as well as the most recent STAR reading and math test results. Please follow the directions on the report, to KEEP the STAR result pages (stapled on top), but return the signed yellow sheet and attached math test. Thanks! The Reading test the students take this Tuesday will be sent home after the New Year.
2. Please note that next week's Sing-Along is a student-only event. While we'd love to have parents there, it is intended to be a school experience, not a performance. Thanks for your understanding.
3. The Polar Express Experience is coming to Room 402. This Wednesday, the students are invited to board the Polar Express for a grand adventure. This will be an interactive experience (with surprises the students do not yet know about...) Not to worry, they'll "return" safely. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know ASAP. Please also remember that Wednesday is an early dismissal day. Students will be dismissed at 12:55. Please make arrangements for an on-time pick up!
4. If/When thinking about holiday cards/gifts (there are NO expectations), please remember to include staff members on campus who may work with your child in roles other than classroom teacher. This may include our wonderful Aide, Mrs. Park, other educators who work directly with your child, office staff and administration, yard supervisors, custodians, Library and Cafeteria managers, and many more.
5. Genius Hour presentations are all complete at this time. The students did a wonderful job teaching their peers all about their topic of choice. We learned a lot from each and every presentation and I am so proud of the hard work that goes into such a project, as well as courage it takes to present in front of a group! Work will be assessed and graded during Winter Break (each slideshow takes a while to go through, as it is graded on many different aspects), and score sheets will be sent home with the first Weekly Report in January.
6. Report cards will be completed over the next few weeks and posted in Aeries, beginning January 9th. Please be sure to take time to review the reports online, once available, and let me know if you have any questions.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and were able to stay safe in the strong winds. There was a moment when the South Mountain fire looked like it was on approach toward Camarillo, but the winds shifted, and the amazing firefighters were thankfully able to get a handle on it.

However, they can and should access the slideshows to practice and prepare for their presentations (they signed up for their day on Friday). Any additional props or demos may/must be completed at home and brought in the day of the presentation. We all look forward to learning about what each student has been studying!

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE AT THIS TIME:.
1. Many families are scheduling school tours at the middle school sites over the next few months. It is a great way to get a feel for the different schools and students are encouraged to attend to help with the decision making that comes along with School-of-Choice. I appreciate knowing in advance if your child will be missing a morning (or more) in order to visit one of the schools. Thank you to the parents who have already been notifying me.
2. The biggest classroom need at this time is Kleenex (or any brand of facial tissue). Our noses are running more with the colder temperatures. We thank you for any supply you can send in.
3. I have opened the window to order and process Scholastic Book orders through midnight THIS WEDNESDAY, December 6th, in order to guarantee arrival before Winter Break. If you do not place orders prior to this date/time, I cannot promise you delivery before we dismiss for break. If you are interested in ordering books through Scholastic, please use the following link and use code GVLDB to connect to my class. If you have not yet registered through my class portal, you must first make this switch or your order will go to a previous teacher and may not be placed in time... clubs.scholastic.com/home
4. Students have finished their work on their Genius Hour slideshows and are getting ready to present either this week or next. All slideshows were submitted through Google Classroom on Friday and students are no longer allowed to complete any more work on them at this point. However, they can and should access the slideshows to practice and prepare for their presentations (they signed up for their day on Friday). Any additional props or demos may/must be completed at home and brought in the day of the presentation. We all look forward to learning about what each student has been studying!
5. The Polar Express Experience is coming to Room 402. On the last day of school before Winter Break, the students will board the Polar Express for a grand adventure. Not to worry, they'll "return" safely. More info to come...
6. Coming on December 14th: PTA-sponsored Math Game Night. Here is a link to sign up and more information and details will be coming soon... bit.ly/3N1FwFC
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break, and were able to spend time with family and friends. I hope all travel was safe and all gatherings were healthy.

2. The Balloons Over Atherwood parade was so much fun and it was great to see so many parents in attendance. We had just a few casualties with balloons, but for the most part, they made it through the parade unscathed. It was wonderful to see all the creativity in design.

I think that is all for now. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions. Have a wonderful week!
I hope you are all having a wonderful week off (at least from school). I just wanted to take a moment to wish you all a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving.
In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving Break, we discussed and did some lessons related to gratitude, appreciation, and thankfulness in our Morning Meetings and as part of our Super Power of the Month. I hope that your child(ren) have shared some of their ideas with you. It seems that they all have some wonderful things to be thankful for in their lives.
This Thanksgiving, I, too, have so many things to be grateful for. One of those things is getting to share this school year with your families. I feel very blessed to get to work with such a great group of compassionate, hard-working, and talented (in so many ways) students!! Truly. As you may or may not be aware, being a teacher is a very difficult line of work, especially the last few years, though one I would not trade in for anything. But your kids make those sometimes very difficult and challenging days so much brighter, and bring tons of smiles to my face daily!!
Best wishes to you all, and Happy Thanksgiving. Stay safe and healthy.
I hope you all had a wonderful extended weekend, and were able to honor our Veterans in a special way. As we approach Thanksgiving break, please remember all that we have to be grateful for in our lives. I thank you for sharing your kids with me this year and am grateful for the opportunity to work with them (and you) as they become more critical and independent thinkers and learners.
Coming up the next few weeks of school (subject to change - check the Calendar link on my site for most up-to-date info):

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE AT THIS TIME:.
1. Thank you so much to all of the parents who signed up to help with the Scholastic Book Fair last week. I was sad not to be able to attend with our class, but I was able to go earlier in the week and purchase some wonderful new books to add to our class Library.
2. You may recall that as part of our Boosterthon fundraising, students earned the highest level for our class, which was to watch a movie in class. The class also voted to combine many other levels of our incentives into one single day. That day is approaching!! This Wednesday morning, the students will participate in MOVIE MORNING, which includes PJ Day, bring a stuffed animal (only 1 and must be small enough to fit in a backpack), bring a blanket (on the smaller side), and bring a pillow (also, on the smaller side). All of those are optional, of course, and students can participate in whatever they feel most comfortable with. Of course, PJs must be school appropriate. NO slippers. They also earned popcorn and juice to go along with the movie. I will provide Skinny Pop original flavor popcorn and Capri Sun 100% Juice fruit juice. Finally - last week, students were given several options for the movie, all G-rated. They narrowed it down to just a few, and ultimately, the winning film was The Wizard of Oz. Here is a link to the Common Sense Media review, in case you are interested. www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/the-wizard-of-oz If you have any concerns about ANY of this information, please contact me ASAP.
3. The Balloons Over Atherwood parade is coming to Atherwood on Friday, November 17th at 8:30 a.m. Last week, the students and I read Balloons Over Broadway in class, and learned about the history of the parade. They started planning their very own balloon float, which will be paraded (much like the Halloween parade) for parents and others to enjoy this Friday. This week, materials (sticks, balloons, construction paper, and more) will be sent home for students to complete their balloon. Please make sure it is assembled at the last minute and brought safely to school on Friday morning. In the event of rain, we will offer an alternate route than the lower field.
4. We are now in the final stretch of the first Genius Hour projects. At this point, students have completed most of their research and are working hard on their slideshows. There are only 2 more work sessions in class - this Friday and December 1st - before all slideshows are due. Remember - students may not work on slides at home or during Thanksgiving break. I am able to see when work is completed outside of class time. Any additional props or demos may/must be completed at home, unless students have finished their slides and have time during class. More details about the expectations of Genius Hour can be found in Google Classroom for each grade level. Please refer to that, if you still have questions.
5. Please check out the PTA website for more detailed information about current events (link above and here): www.atherwoodpta.com/news

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend, with a smooth transition falling back an hour. I am one of the odd ones that loves when it gets darker earlier in the day, so I am now in my happy zone. :)

Please take a moment to view the Progress Report PRIOR to the conference and come prepared with any questions/concerns you may have. (UPDATE: Please note that Aeries has been down much of Sunday (due to an issue on their end, not the District's) and therefore, the Progress Report deadline for teachers has been extended into Monday. Assuming that Aeries is up and running on Monday and we can finish inputting all data, Progress Reports will be available for you to view beginning Tuesday morning. Thanks for your patience.)
4. Our Room Parents sent out an information letter last week in order to introduce themselves and ask your permission to contact you via email. If you have not already, please be sure to return the notice ASAP. If you are not interested in being on their contact list, please still send back the paper and just don't check either option. Thanks.
5. This week we will have TWO Spirit Days:
On Wednesday, the school will be recognizing UNITY DAY and all students are encouraged to wear the color ORANGE. While we should practice these skills EVERY day, Unity Day is meant to promote acceptance, kindness, and inclusion of ALL people, regardless of their differences. It goes along great with our current SuperPower of EMPATHY!
On Friday, students are encouraged to wear FLANNEL/PLAIDfor our Spirit Day. Just because! :)
6. On Thursday morning, we will participate in the GREAT SHAKEOUT with and earthquake and evacuation drill. We will review what to do in the event of an earthquake and discuss safety measures we can take. We may be outside for an extended period of time while we go through the entire procedure that morning, so students may want to be sure to wear sunglasses, sunscreen, and/or a hat to school that day.
7. The past few weeks, students have gotten to work on their Genius Hour projects and are already learning so much about their selected topics. This week, we will continue researching and taking notes about the driving questions as well as start to work on the slideshow. Students will be given access to the slideshow link and will start completing the technology component of the project.
8. PTA has extended the collection of candy for our upcoming Trunk or Treatevent. You can continue to send all candy donations to the office throughout this week.
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and got to enjoy the cooler temperatures than during the week.

1. Thank you so much for all of the support during our Boosterthon fundraiser. Because of the tremendous fundraising efforts of our class and the school, we were able to meet, actually fly past the school goal of raising $45,000. Please be sure to touch base with all of your donors to make sure the funding goes through. Thank you, also, to all of the family members and friends who came out to support us the day of the event. It was so fabulous to see you all there and for you to get to run/walk the last lap with the kids!!
2. Last week, students started their first Genius Hour project of the year. We have some really amazing topics this session and I look forward to learning so much, right along with the kids. We will continue researching and taking notes about our driving questions this Friday. Students are already gaining so many valuable skills and knowledge from the project!

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE AT THIS TIME:.
1. Classroom needs: Every once in a while, I will ask for some supplies for the classroom to be provided/donated, if possible. At this time, we are running a little low on tissue, as there have been many runny noses/allergies acting up recently. If you have a spare box or 2, we would appreciate you sending it in. As well, I would love a few packs of Astrobright 24 pound, assorted colors copy paper, which I use for Weekly Reports and other items. Here is a link to a sample of what I am seeking, but there are a few multi-color packs to choose from. The important part is the 24 pound weight specification. Thanks in advance!! www.amazon.com/Neenah-Astrobrights-Bright-Letter-Assorted/dp/B00UMD69PK/ref=sr_1_5?crid=21D7DC31O1YJP&keywords=astrobrights%2Bcolor%2Bpaper&qid=1694987115&sprefix=astrobright%2Caps%2C268&sr=8-5&th=1
2. As you know, we are currently FUNdraising for the Boosterthon event coming up this Friday. Last week, as a school, we completed one of the nightly challenges and earned PAJAMA DAY, which we will celebrate this coming Tuesday. Students may wear APPROPRIATE Pjs that day, but must also wear school appropriate shoes. We do have PE that day, so students should be comfy enough to run. Of course, the day is optional and students do not have to participate if they do not want to.
3. Continuing with Boosterthon news and information: Our entire class has registered on mybooster.com !! Woo-hoo!! Let's continue to fundraise as much as we can for Atherwood, in order to help fund school programs, supplies, and field trips! We have school, class, and individual incentive levels to be reached along the way. Every night, try to reach out to just one more friend or family member, near or far (all fundraising is done online), to bring in donations. The event is on Friday and parents are allowed to attend on the lower lawn. Time is yet to be determined, but I will let you know as soon as we find out.
4. This week, students in my class will be starting Genius Hour. On Monday, students will brainstorm ideas and start completing a plan/proposal for their individualized unit of study. The form needs to be signed by a parent, to ensure you agree it is appropriate and feasible, and returned no later than Wednesday, for approval by Miss Saffro. Our first research session will begin this Friday.
5. PTA waiver forms are coming home tonight. In order for students and family members to participate in any PTA sponsored events on campus (Boosterthon, Trunk or Treat, movie night, etc.) these forms need to be completed and returned. Please do so as soon as possible. Thanks!
6. There are also many other things going on within our awesome Atherwood PTA right now: Reflections program (submissions are due by the 28th) and the membership drive (with school wide incentive levels). They will be attending a Room Parent meeting this week and will be in touch in the coming weeks.

3. This week, we will be starting Universal Access (UA) rotations 3 days a week. Our 5th/6th students have been assessed on fluency and comprehension and have been split among 5 teachers based on their on skill levels, for targeted instruction. This session, we will focus on increasing fluency, as well as studying metacognitive processes to help develop/improve our reading and comprehension skills.
4. Thursday is DOT DAY, in honor of Peter Reynolds' book The Dot!!! We are encouraging all students to wear dots on Thursday - it can be something round/circular that is already part of a clothing design, or students can be creative and design a new look using dots they make. We look forward to seeing all the expressions of DOTS on Thursday.
5. This week, we are kicking off our annual Boosterthon FUN RUN, which will take place on September 22nd. I sent out registration information last week, but if you have not yet registered your child, or started fundraising, please do so at mybooster.com We already have about 1/3 of the class registered and a handful of students earning funds for the school! Each day, students will watch a video, discuss character traits, and hopefully be inspired to help raise funds for Atherwood. This is the only fundraiser we do for the school year, and while it is not mandatory to fundraise, we do want all students registered and hope to get everyone participating. We will have class level incentives and school wide goals to reach throughout the 2 fundraising weeks, leading up to a FUNomenal event on September 22nd.

The evening is intended to be for parents, but if you are unable to get childcare and need to bring your child/ren, they are welcome to sit in the classroom library and remain quiet during the presentation.
2. Last week, flyers went home with information about Picture Day. If your child did not give it to you, it is likely still in their Homework folder. Please ask for it. Our Picture Day is next Tuesday, September 5th.

Please be sure to check out Mrs. Kaitz's Weekly Update for important messages about all things Atherwood. She sent it out earlier this evening and it includes a lot of really critical school, district, and PTA information.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE AT THIS TIME:.
1. The very first Weekly Report will be sent home this Wednesday. This week, you will find the results of the STAR math and reading tests taken last week. The district uses these results as a baseline to see student growth and progress throughout the year. Please keep the copies of the results for your records, and just sign and return the bright yellow cover page.
2. Please note the date AND TIME of Back to School Night on August 31st. Our class will meet from 7:00-7:45 in Room 402. The evening is intended to be for parents, but if you are unable to get childcare and need to bring your child/ren, they are welcome to sit in the classroom library and remain quiet during the presentation.
3. Now that we have the PE, Library, MakerSpace, and other school schedules in place (though not all are up and running yet), I have updated the link for A Typical Weekly Schedule in Miss Saffro's Class above. While ALL school hours are critical, it is understandable that on occasion, doctors' appointments need to be/can only be made during school hours. Please use the schedule to help navigate the best time for your child to miss class, should that scenario arise. As well, a heads up of such an occurrence is always appreciated.
4. In the next week or two, I will need to submit the name of a parent or parents who would like to volunteer as Room Parents for this school year. I ask very little of my Room Parent/s, relying mostly on them to plan a party or two each year, and coordinate any class communication necessary with other parents for a variety of reasons. If this is something of interest to you, please let me know.
5. I sent an email earlier, testing out my parent email list. If you have not already responded that you have seen it, please be sure to check your email and and do so once you get it. Likewise, if you did not receive it, please let me know so we can figure out the error. I want to make sure we are all in good communication with one another throughout the year!
Be sure to check out the "Current Studies" link on this site to find out what we will be working on this week in all subjects. If you are ever unsure what the homework is on any given night, please remember to check out the "Independent Work" link on this site.
I think that is all for now. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions. Have a wonderful week!
I hope that your children have come home from their first few days of school excited to be in my class and motivated for what is sure to be an amazing school year. I am certainly thrilled for each and every one of them to be part of my class and look forward to learning more about them as the days go on. Every student brings a unique perspective and offerings to the class, and I can't wait for them to shine in their own way!
Thank you so much to those of you who have already signed up for Remind. If you have not, please be sure to follow the directions in the packet to access reminders through the Remind app (the link is also posted above). I am sure you will find it helpful throughout each week. As well, thanks to those who have completed and returned the bright pink page that was attached to my opening packet. If you are not yet finished filling it out, please make sure the pink paper is returned no later than Tuesday, along with your child's Star Student poster. We will also be labeling folders and spiral notebooks on Tuesday of this week, so please be sure all recommended supplies are in by then. If you are unable to send in an item, please let me know and I am happy to supply it.
This week we will continue getting to know one another and forming a classroom 'family'. Students are becoming familiar with school/classroom routines and expectations and we will continue to reinforce those this week as well. We will also be completing several district and school mandated assessments this week, some of which require the use of the district-issued laptop. Please be sure those are being charged each night at home and brought to school EVERY day, along with the charger.
Please take a moment to peruse this website, add it to your bookmarks, and become familiar with the content, especially the Calendar and Independent Work sections. There are still a few pages under construction for the new school year, but will be updated soon, once I have been provided more information from the district. As of yet, PE, Library, and Makerspace schedules are not in place. Once they are, I will provide a more 'typical' weekly schedule for you.
Finally, please be sure to save the date of August 31st for Back to School Night. It will provide you a time to come in and get to know me a bit better, as well as learn more about how the class will be run this year. I know it seems as though that is a long way off, so in the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to send me an email.
WELCOME!!! The following letter will be sent home on the first day of school and will have informational pages as well as a form for you to fill out attached. Please read through the packet carefully and complete the necessary steps. I look forward to working with you and your child this year to make it a successful 5th or 6th grade experience!
Things for you to do at this time:
Read the Welcome Letter and general information on the next few pages.
Complete and return the attached STUDENT INFORMATION SHEET byTUESDAY, AUGUST 15th. It is bright pink and the last page of this packet. Please complete BOTH SIDES. This is an important document for me to gather some critical information about your child. Please use your NEATEST writing so that I can accurately record your email address and contact information. If you need more space, feel free to attach additional pages.
Log on to Aeries Parent Portal as soon as possible and update all required information, as well as the authorizations. This is a process which needs to be done at the start of EVERY school year. If you are unsure of your login information, please contact the office ASAP.
Save the date: Back to School Night on Thursday, August 31st. More information will be sent to you as we get closer to the date.
Familiarize yourself and become friends with my website, which is updated weekly. Most questions can be answered by carefully reading the information provided in the links. https://saffroteach.weebly.com
Sign up for Remind text messaging. Directions are within this packet and on my website. It is a very easy way for me to get short messages/reminders to families throughout the week.
In case you have any questions, I have also attached a business card with my email, school phone number, and website address. Please feel free to drop me a line anytime.
